WHO WE ARE

Berkeley Innovation (BI) is the home of human-centered design at UC Berkeley. Since 2003, we’ve united makers, thinkers, tinkerers, and doers from a wide range of disciplines behind a shared love for design innovation. Our mission is to connect Berkeley students to collaborative innovation through education, practice, and thought leadership. Each semester, we provide educational opportunities through guest speakers, designathons, and design "bootcamps." Our consultants tackle real world design problems for our clients and industry partners. In addition to consultant work, we host a variety and social and career events to foster a strong design community at Cal.

OUR PROCESS
Our creative approach to the human-centered design process is what makes us Berkeley Innovation.
We thus thrive at the intersection of desirability, viability, and feasibility.
SPRINT 1:
USER RESEARCH
By conducting user research, our consultants identify users’ goals, pains, and context. By interacting with the broad spectrum of people who will interact with our designs, we’re able to narrow down our audience and understand their needs.
SPRINT 2:
IDEATION
Drawing on our research, our consultants utilize affinity mapping, personas, user flows and other tools to synthesize and organize key insights. From this analysis, our consultants begin brainstorming a wide range of solutions. After thorough exploration, we focus our ideas to converge into one balanced solution.
SPRINT 3:
PROTOTYPING
Our consultants begin with low-fidelity prototyping, often employing paper and pen to organize the main information and visual elements of their solution mockups. Working with their client, each team then carefully moves their prototype into higher fidelity by incorporating specific branding guidelines, detailing user interactions, and thoroughly implementing the structure of their design solution.
SPRINT 4:
USER TESTING & ITERATION
By testing their prototype with their target audience, each team learns how effective their solution is in achieving its initial goal. After repeatedly testing and modifying the prototype to better fit the needs of the user, we are enabled to ensure the best interaction possible between the client, product, and user.
